The Kennedy's

As I mentioned in my first post, the Kennedy Family is buried in Arlington Cemetery. In section 45 it consists of John F. Kennedy, Edward Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy.

John F. Kennedy was buried in Arlington Cemetery on November 25, 1963. Buried among him are two of his children who had died before him. The grave area itself consists of irregular stones of Cape Cod granite and the Eternal Flame burning from the center of a 5 ft circular stone at the head of the grave. The flame was lit by Mrs. Kennedy during the funeral. The entire site is a total of 3.2 acres and was considered unfit for graves or a general burial location. The total cost for the site was $1,841,026!

The site was completed on October 6, 1994 with the addition of Jacueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis grave stone. She was buried on May 23, 1994 next to President Kennedy.

Let's Get it Started!

Alright it is time to start All Things Arlington! On this first post I am going to start off with my visit to Arlington National Cemetery. In May of 2011, six girls, including myself, spent the whole entire day walking around this beautiful historic site in Arlington, Virginia. Around us there were full green leaved trees, a small creek running through out the site, and rows upon rows of white grave stones. The sounds in the area were limited. You could hear the birds chirping, small whispers from the people around you, and the clicks of pictures being taken. It was serene. People are walking slowly along the path while reading the names of the deceased or remembering our countries history. About halfway up the path, there was a small crowd gathered around a group of grave sites. It was the Kennedy family. You keep walking to the end of the trail and once again you see a group of people. They are all quiet as they watch something to simple being done but with so much meaning. This was the changing of the guards in front of the Tomb of the Unknown soldier. This was my favorite aspect of the site. I will be going through this particular aspect in my next blog. Every where we went throughout the day, it was peaceful. Which I believe is the point of Arlington. It is a final resting place for those who have done amazing things for our country. Keep checking my blog for more information on this wonderful historical site.
